More fun with foam

Note: This post was drafted months ago when the fishing and the weather (read: temperature) were not so favorable. I was into my ‘off season’ fly tying and trying something new. Thanks for visiting.

I have been slow to embrace closed-cell foam in my fly tying. Actually, slow to embrace a lot of synthetics, being somewhat old school and learning tying with natural materials. I suppose another reason is that I have a mountain of fur and feathers that need to be used. However, wanting to tie some larger surface or diving flies for trout and smallmouth bass convinced me start playing with closed-cell foam.

So far my work with closed-cell foam has been trout focused though I’m sure they would be fun to use for pan fish like bluegills.

Have dabbled with larger hooks intended for bass, but I think they are still too small.
